I’ve had my eye on a MacBook Air for quite a while now. I wanted to wait a few years to let them work out the kinks and get the specs up to par. Well my wait is over. I have parted with my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) for a new MacBook Air. I have to admit that I was worried about the loss of power and wondered if I would regret it. The truth is I haven’t given any thought to the performance of the machine. Mostly because it just works and I don’t notice any loss of performance in my day-to-day.
The number one reason I wanted the new Air is for it’s size. Obviously right? But seriously it is so portal that I don’t feel burdened by bringing it with me on the road. I also work from more comfortable places such as the bed or couch. The battery life is such that I don’t always have to bring the charger with me. I’ve gone from carrying a huge backpack (~12 lbs) to carrying just a sleeve and the Air (~2 lbs). This alone makes it worth any loss (not that I’ve noticed any) of performance. Of course I’m not rendering video or playing games. I use this solely for web browser, rails development and the occasional Minecraft session.
