I’m a Windows guy. I’ve never used Linux. I’ve never used OS X. The only operating system I have ever used besides Windows was MS-DOS. So when I say I’m a Windows guy I mean it. I’ve been heavily invested in the world of Microsoft for basically my whole life. I never really considered this to be a bad thing; maybe I still don’t.
However, some time ago I started down a path toward the dark side. I started a personal movement that gets me out of my comfort zone and into new uncharted territory. It all began by accident really. One day I was obliviously happily coasting through life when a coworker taunted my into trying C#. While I realize this is still a Microsoft technology it was a big jump from my Visual Basic roots. I consider this my first step toward the rabbit hole. Since then I’ve been seeking out new technologies for no other reason than to learn.
My latest venture is a bigger step for me both personally and financially. It’s something I have been considering for a while now. If I’m honest I can’t even give a valid reason other than superficial things like it “looks awesome”. Of course that didn’t stop me. About three weeks ago I was cruising the interwebs on my BAMSYM custom built PC when I found myself on Apple’s website. After laughing at their prices and modest specs I forced myself to close the window.
Over the next 48 hours I would find myself randomly visiting apple.com. I would build a MacBook Pro, laugh at the price and then close the window shaking my head. At this point I was annoying myself. Yet it continued this way with probably a dozen or so more visits without any logic behind it. Why do I keep wasting my time, I don’t even want one.
Finally out of sheer frustration I pulled the trigger. I built a MacBook Pro and added it to my cart. I let it sit in my cart for nearly 10 minutes before I finally completed the checkout process. What a strange feeling. I felt like I had accomplished something yet I had no idea what it was. At that point I wasn’t even sure why I wanted a Mac or what I would do with it once I had it.
Just last week I returned from work to find a package sitting on my bed. I was crazy excited. I slowly examined everything from the box to the manuals before I pulled out the actual MacBook. I flipped open the lid and realized that although I had no idea what I would use this for I was extremely happy I had bought it. A quick press of the power button and the screen lit up. I worked my way through the setup wizard and was greeted with a rather cool and fitting animation welcoming me to the Apple universe.
I have a confession that true Apple fans will not enjoy hearing. I spent about 10 minutes with Leopard before I found myself researching how to install Windows. Fast forward an hour or so and I was starting at brand new MacBook Pro running Windows. I do plan to invest more time on the OS X side but for now I’m content with having the coolest Windows laptop available.
