The Mint
Today’s post is written with a strange mix of sadness and excitement. An odd combination to be sure. Sadness because this will be my last week with my current employer. I’ve enjoyed my time here and met some wonderful people that I will miss working with. At the same time I’m crazy excited to start a new gig. A new gig without VB.NET.
When I first started here there was no C# to be found. Everything was VB.NET and to be honest I prefered it that way. I was a long time VB user and held on to that with a tight grip. Almost nine months ago I had a dramatic shift in thought process and became a C# convert. Since that time I’ve managed to sneak C# into two different projects. I also managed to put C# into the mind of the “solution architech” as the way forward. Thoughts of switching to a C# shop are flying around along with grunts about leaving VB.NET.
I’m happy with my personal progress and with the influence I’m having on the development team. But my day-to-day still involves using VB.NET almost exclusively. I’m not saying that’s why I’m leaving but I certainly won’t miss VB.NET.
Looking forward I’m excited at the opportunity for learning. My new employer is considerably smaller with only four developers (of which only one is in-house). Despite their size (or maybe because of) they are using some very interesting stuff that I’ve never seen before but am excited to learn.
